I always buy a few raffle tickets at the Scottish Association of Writers annual conference and this year was no different. Usually I end up going home with chocolates or wine under my arm but in March I was lucky enough to grab a one hour telephone consultation with the lovely Claire Wingfield Editorial and Literary Consultant.
Claire suggested a face to face instead and so, never one to miss out on an adventure, off I went. I had an unexpectedly interesting weekend in Dunfermline.
I hadn’t met Claire when she facilitated a workshop at the SAW conference and as I bought her book, 52 Dates for Writers there I was keen to speak with her.
We met up at Fire Station Creative in the heart of the town. The venue was renovated from an original Fire Station and transformed into a unique art centre. Some of the original features have been preserved such as the old traffic lights and fireman’s pole. Disappointingly there were no actual fireman to be found.
Claire gave me lots of useful tips, like “Always have copies of your books with you.” I didn’t. She did and here’s the proof. Simple really but every meeting should be an opportunity to promote your work.
We talked about all sorts of marketing from social media, including paid Facebook and Amazon ads, to touting your wares at events and workshops. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and I will definitely be keeping in touch with Claire and using her services in the future.
For now I am still getting my head around all of the aspects of what being a writer means and marketing is just another side of it added to my list.
